Innovative Instructional Technology for Students with Disabilities and Diverse Learning Styles

This workshop directly fulfills the current DESE Individual Professional Development plan requirement of 15 PDPs related to strategies for effective schooling for students with disabilities and instruction of students with diverse learning styles. Participants will explore a variety of tools and strategies to reach every learner. We will explore readily available technologies which promote independence and success for students with reading and reading comprehension challenges, written expression challenges and executive function challenges. Tools include the Google Suite as well as numerous free and low-cost online multimedia resources for inclusive practices.

Graduate Credit (Pending) At the first class, participants may choose to register for 1 graduate credit through Worcester State University for an additional fee of $125. All participants, including those who do not opt for graduate credit, will receive a certificate documenting the number of course hours attended. 

Karen Janowski

Karen Janowski is an Assistive & Educational Technology Consultant, and former Adjunct Professor at Simmons College in Boston, MA. She presents both locally and nationally about the importance of using ubiquitous technologies which remove the obstacles to learning for all students and is a passionate advocate of Universal Design for Learning. She is an EdCampBoston and EdCampAccess organizer and co-moderates #ATchat on Twitter. She is the President of EdTech Solutions, Inc in Reading, MA.

Week 1: The first week provides a strong foundation in inclusive and universal practices to reach every learner. Participants will have an opportunity to reflect on their current instruction and target areas needing adaptation.

Week 2: Explore tools and strategies to reach students who struggle with reading – decoding, fluency and comprehension. 

Week 3: Explore tools and strategies to reach students who struggle with written expression. These include features in Google Docs as well as innovative tools to reach reluctant writers.

Week 4: Explore tools for executive functions – time management, organization, self-regulation, note-taking, and study skills. 

Project Description:  

Those educators wishing to receive one credit from WSU will be creating a multimedia lesson in one of the topic areas that incorporates at least two tools and two strategies learned to support struggling learners as well as the rationale for the tools and instructional strategies they selected. This will be further discussed during the last session and can be customized using Universal Design for Learning Principles.
